An accomplished rock climber who set a speed record on one ofYosemite’s famed El Capitan routesrecently died in an accident in California’s Sierra Nevada.
Jake Whisenant, age 30, died on Aug.3, according to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division.
Authorities haven’t disclosed the circumstances of his death — but it was listed as an accident.
His death was announced by Bailee Moore, who described Whisenant as her “lifelong friend and confidant.”

Moore wrote that her heart was “impossibly heavy” as she shared the news.
“Our family is absolutely devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves inthe beautiful Sierra Nevada,” said Moore.

Whisenant had made a name for himself in Yosemite’s climbing community with a series of impressive feats on El Capitan, one of the most challenging places torock-climb.

In October 2024, Whisenant and climber Brant Hysell set a speed record onEl Capitan’s Lurking Fear route, completing the climb in 2 hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds.
At the time, Whisenant described it as a “truly magical day that I’ll never forget.”
“We both tapped into a flow state, fully committed to our plan, and most importantly had an absolute blast on our favorite rock,” he said.
Whisenant’s friendsexpressed their grief on social media following news of his death.
“My heart is broken with you.Jake was such a light in this world,” one person wrote.

“Jake was such a kind and genuine human, and he will always hold a special place in my heart,” another said.

“Preparedness and self-reliance are essential,” the NPS’s website says.
“Make sure to plan for all potential hazards before your trip.”

Officials recommend carrying appropriate equipment and clothing, knowing personal physical limitations and being prepared to turn around if conditions become unsafe.

The NPS also cautions that emergency assistance may not be immediate inremote wilderness areasand urges visitors to be prepared to rely on themselves in an emergency.
