Fishing trip turns into nightmare as California man, 12-year-old boy disappear in storm

A family is hoping for answers after a California man and his 12-year-old nephew disappeared duringa fishing tripoff Mexico.

Oscar Ulloa and his nephew were reported missing in the Sea of Cortez near San Felipe, Baja California, according to a Facebook post from Ulloa’s cousin, Alistair Barradell.

“My family is going through a very difficult time right now,” Barradell wrote.“My cousin Oscar is missing at sea in the Sea of Cortez near San Felipe, Baja California, along with his 12-year-old nephew.”

The pair had gone out for a fishing trip on Saturday, Oct.10 — and have not been heard from since, according to reports.

Their disappearance came asTropical Storm Rachelbrought dangerous weather to the region.

Barradell said the family is hoping for their safe return and is asking people who have beenfishing or travelingin the area to share any information that could help.

“You never know who might see it or who might have information that could help,” he wrote.

A search has been underway by air and sea, with Mexican authorities working to locate the missing boat.

Barradell told NBC San Diego that the Mexican coast guard was conducting aerial searches and that the family had also hireda private planeto help. 

He said the family does not know whether the boat experienced engine trouble or something more serious as the weather worsened.

“During that time, the weather did turn bad, so we’re not sure if we had engine problems or something more catastrophic,” Barradell told the outlet.

Mexican naval authorities have deployed six units and a specialized search aircraft, with crews searching more than 9,900 square nautical miles, according to reports.

Crews reportedly spotted a cooler and life jacket during the search, though authorities have not confirmed whether either item was connected to the missing boat.

As efforts continue, Barradell is asking people around theSea of Cortezto remain on the lookout.

“Any information could make a difference,” he wrote.“Please keep Oscar and the young boy inyour thoughts and prayers.”
