The scam text test

If a text asks you to click, pay, verify, sign in or fix a problem, run through these checks first.

1) Was I expecting this?

Are you actually waiting for that package?Do you use that bank?Did you recently drive on a toll road?If the answer is no, treat the message as suspicious.Even if the answer is yes, don’t assume it’s real.Scammers rely on coincidence.They send thousands of similar messages knowing that some recipients will be waiting for a package or use the company being impersonated.

2) Is it trying to rush me?

Urgency is one of the biggest red flags.Watch for phrases like:

Act now
Final warning
Verify immediately
Avoid penalties
Account suspended

A real company may send an urgent alert, but scammers use pressure to stop you from checking whether the message is legitimate.Take a breath before responding.A few extra minutes spent verifying the message can prevent days or weeks of dealing with a stolen account.

3) Does the link look off?

Before tapping, check for:

Misspelled brand names
Extra words or random characters
Shortened links
Web addresses that look close to the real one but aren’t exact
Domains that have nothing to do with the company named in the message

Legitimate companies may send you a one-time verification code.However, a bank, government agency or customer service representative should never ask you to give that code to someone else.Anyone who asks for your code may be trying to take control of your account.

6) Can I verify it without using the text?

This is the most important step.Instead of using the link or phone number in the message:

Open the official app
Type the company’s website address manually
Call the number printed on your card or bill
Use a phone number found on the company’s official website

If the issue is real, you should still be able to find it through one of those trusted channels.

What scam texts usually look like

Fake bank alerts

These texts claim someone used your card, your account has been locked or you must verify a transaction immediately.The message may include a phone number connecting you to ascammer pretending to work for the bank.

Fake toll notices

Toll scamsclaim you owe a small amount and will face a larger penalty if you don’t pay immediately.The amount is often low enough to make paying seem easier than investigating.The payment page then steals your financial information.

Fake account warnings

These messages claim your email, payment app, streaming service or social media account will be suspended.They direct you to afake login page designed to capture your username and password.These scams work because each message sounds plausible.The goal is to make you react first and think later.

What to do if you already tapped

Don’t panic, but act quickly.

If you clicked a link

Close the page
Don’t download anything
Don’t enter any information
Clear the page from yourbrowserhistory
Watch for unusual pop-ups, downloads or account alerts

Simply opening a phishing page doesn’t always mean your information was stolen.The risk increases if you entered information, downloaded a file or approved a permission request.

If you entered a password

Change the password immediately
Change it on any other account where you reused it
Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)
Review recent account activity
Sign out of devices you don’t recognize

If you entered your Social Security number

If you downloaded something

Run a security scan

After securing your accounts:

Use your phone’s Report Junk or Report Spam option
Forward the message to 7726, which spells SPAM
Block the sender
Delete the message
